Kata Tjuta means 'many heads' in the local aboriginal language, and the name is indeed appropriate. There are actually 36 domes - or 'heads' - and these rise in an impressive jumble from the surrounding desert.
Kata Tjuta contains many sacred sites, and is of great spiritual significance to the local Anangu people.
